Writing

Writing was the second medium that I decided to practice. I had always enjoyed writing, but I officially began AP-style writing when I joined BurntXOrange Magazine and later worked toward further enhancing my knowledge of journalistic writing through university classes. Now, I am a writer for Austin Woman Magazine, where I highlight women-owned businesses and look for stories that will inspire women across central Texas.

Jumping the Mental Hurdles of Adulting to Live a Full Life

There’s been an uptick in recent years of adults looking to take adult beginner classes. Whether this is a result from the solitude of the pandemic or because of the increase in mental health awareness, no one really knows. The trend is slowly becoming more prominent, likely due to its positive impact on people’s lives. Adults of all ages should be looking for ways to add excitement to their mundane weekly routines. People can enroll in pottery, singing, dancing, cooking and more classes with the sole goal of breaking out of the usual 9-5 schedule.

Kisses from the Diaspora: An Event for AAPI Musicianship

Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) heritage month went out with a bang at mHart’s Kisses from the Diaspora music showcase that was held on May 31 at Cheer Up Charlies. This was their first big event. With the decrease in DEI initiatives, events like mHart’s AAPI event provide a safe haven for people to express themselves through their artistry and embrace their cultural roots. mHart is Austin’s first and only Asian American music label and was founded in August 2023 by Waverly, a Cambodian-born musician based in Austin.

How One Artist Turned Her Love of Doodling Into a Space for Women to Create

On a rainy October day, four Austinites settled at a table inside Cherrywood Coffeehouse. From an outsider's perspective, the four might have looked like any regular study group, but there wasn’t a laptop or textbook in sight — in place was a blank canvas and a few black markers. An aroma of coffee beans filled the air, a warm glow of the ceiling-hung lanterns lit the room and a buzz of lively chatter and keyboard typing...

Lucky 7: Aguas Frescas {Refreshing Springtime Sips}

Nothing’s quite as refreshing as an ice cold cup of Jamaica, horchata, or whichever agua fresca flavor hits the spot. These delectable drinks originated from Mexico and are made from fruit, flowers, seeds, and of course, water and sugar. Aguas frescas or “fresh waters” are often displayed in giant, clear jarras that show off their vibrant colors. So if you’re looking to quench your thirst as it heats up, grab an agua fresca at one of these local Latin bistros.

Alexa Capareda’s childhood memories are coated with the evergreen lush forests of the Philippines. Olivia Rodrigo’s new album, “Guts,” encourages young women to embrace their not-so-pretty emotions. Frustration, anger and sadness are all fundamental parts of the girlhood experience. From Toned-Down to Being Unapologetically Herself

The proximity of the fashion scene to UT’s campus encourages many Longhorns to explore their fashion sense and step into the wondrous world of thrifting. The Arts and Humanities Are More Important Than You Might Think

For as long as there’s been a competitive workforce, there has been a long-standing rivalry between STEM and the arts and humanities majors. From arguments about who makes more money, to who should be taken more seriously, these two fields are often at odds...

Dear Comfort Character, Thank You

Picture this: you wake up in a frenzy in the morning because you snoozed your alarm one too many times. You missed breakfast, your outfit is a mess and you got to your first class a bit late. You spend the rest of the day hungry, stressed and eager to get back home. Once you do, you...

‘Ugly Betty’ Review: The 2006 Comedy-Drama Deserves More Recognition

After finishing the action-and-crime-packed drama “Gotham” on HBO Max, I was on the prowl for a new series to binge over the summer. This time, however, I was looking for a light-hearted series that had humor, relatable characters, and – of course – a little bit of romance; and boy did I find what I was looking for...
